{"id":1240,"date":"2021-07-16T20:34:44","date_gmt":"2021-07-17T03:34:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skierpage.com\/blog\/?p=1240"},"modified":"2022-05-02T19:39:00","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T02:39:00","slug":"eco-the-big-lie-of-recycling-triangles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skierpage.com\/blog\/2021\/07\/eco-the-big-lie-of-recycling-triangles\/","title":{"rendered":"eco: the big lie of recycling triangles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s a wave of articles about the plastic recycling problem, with predictable photos of mountains of plastic trash;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Treehugger: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/plastic-packaging-store-drop-off-label-5188913\">Don&#8217;t Believe the &#8216;Store Drop-Off&#8217; Label When It Comes to Plastic Packaging<\/a><\/li><li>NPR: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/11\/897692090\/how-big-oil-misled-the-public-into-believing-plastic-would-be-recycled\">How Big Oil Misled The Public Into Believing Plastic Would Be Recycled<\/a><\/li><li>etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These all make it too complicated. &#8220;Data collected by Greenpeace from MRFs across the U.S. showed that only #1 and #2 plastic bottles and jugs meet the standard for being marketed as recyclable.&#8221; Those little triangle symbols on <em>every other product<\/em>, especially on plastic bags and films, are simply a lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And &#8220;In store drop-off&#8221; (to later be added to the rest of the trash!) is pointless work for the consumer and the store. In San Francisco you can place your carefully-collected and folded plastic bags on top of your recycling bin, but someone from the waste company told me it ends up in the trash. Obviously it&#8217;s hundreds of times more expensive to try to turn a few grams of mixed post-consumer plastic film into new products than to make new film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"font-size: xx-large\">\u2673\u2674<\/strong> might get recycled, if it&#8217;s clear, no colors, and with minimal dirt, gunk, plastic film, labels, plastic rings, etc. attached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong style=\"font-size: xx-large\">\u2675\u2676\u2677\u2678\u2679<\/strong> is <em>not recycling<\/em>, no matter how many feel-good slogans are placed nearby. It&#8217;s just garbage along with all the rest of the trash we heedlessly produce.
