I don&#8217;t think he&#8217;s selling his famous white Fender Stratocaster &#8220;the Hitmaker,&#8221; which I couldn&#8217;t afford anyway. It reminded me that I meant to blog about David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd&#8217;s) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/auctions\/the-david-gilmour-collection\">record-breaking guitar auction<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously &#8220;The Black Strat&#8221; he played on their hit albums and on tour was going to go for $$$$$$$, and it did, for $3.975M!! But even utter non-entities like an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/lot\/lot-ovation-instruments-new-hartford-1975-an-acoustic-electric-6198074\/?lid=1&amp;from=relatedlot&amp;intobjectid=6198074\">Ovation 12-string acoustic<\/a> bought from the factory along with several other models, that he never composed on, never recorded, never played on tour, estimated to sell for <em>$1,500<\/em> tops, sold for <strong>$93,750<\/strong>, <em>60 times its estimate<\/em>! <a href=\"https:\/\/reverb.com\/p\/ovation-1615-pacemaker-12-string\">You can buy the same guitar from a nobody for $750<\/a>, tell friends it sat in a cupboard in David Gilmour&#8217;s home, and donate the $93,000 you saved to your own charity of choice. There are enough wealthy geezer fans who want a conversation piece on the wall for prices to be ridiculous. Meanwhile there are local guitar makers who will make a beautiful handmade thing to your own specifications for 1\/10th the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/music\/the_black_strat.jpg\" alt=\"David Gilmour's &quot;The Black Strat&quot;\"\/><figcaption>the iconic instrument of a great musician<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/music\/ovation_pacemaker.jpg\" alt=\"a generic Ovation Pacemaker\"\/><figcaption>an instrument a great musician left in a cupboard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Something owned by a famous person of whom I&#8217;m a fan&#8221; doesn&#8217;t appeal much. I&#8217;d be as happy with a signed Scritti Politti record sleeve of the <a href=\"\/blog\/2005\/04\/music-scritti-politti-b-sides-and.html\">greatest B-side ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"interesting-but-the-rise-and-fall-of-ovation\">Interesting but not valuable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"interesting-but-the-rise-and-fall-of-ovation\">The prices attained by these Ovation guitars are crazy, but they&#8217;re decent interesting instruments in their own right. I even owned one.
