Commenter &#8220;WhoCares?&#8221; nails the money quote, and I pound the point home:<\/p>\n<p><strong>WhoCares?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Blahblahblahblahblah.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all just crafty rhetoric out of his mouth. Who cares?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the most telling part of his little self-indulgent pontification : \u201cNone of this is new. What\u2019s new is that the casual fans no longer have to buy if they don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EXACTLY. Just stop there, Price. You don\u2019t have to say anything else. That\u2019s all that needs to be said.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: Musicians should and must be allowed to say \u201cIf you don\u2019t pay, you don\u2019t get to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what IP is there for. There\u2019s always been a free tier of music, where you asked the record store to play a song, or ask a friend to make a copy, or listen to random songs on the radio. Now the legitimate free tier is vast with lots of bands offering free downloads, the Internet Archive offering thousands of live shows for free, etc. It\u2019s a golden age!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But consumers don\u2019t want \u201cRosemary Krust\u201ds free performances, they want popular professionally-made songs by known artists. They\u2019re all out there cheaper than they\u2019ve ever been, high-quality and DRM-free, on Amazon\/Google Play\/iTunes; it\u2019s a golden age! But instead consumers search for\u00a0\u201c&lt;song name&gt; free download\u201d or \u201cwatch\u201d entire albums on YouTube, through the magic of technology they get something for nothing, and <strong>only<\/strong> Google gets $$$$. It\u2019s disingenuous to call it \u201cdon\u2019t care to pay\u201d when you enable and profit from flattening the pyramid into a pancake where everyone but a few die-hard music fans finds whatever they want in the \u201cdon\u2019t HAVE to pay\u201d tier, *regardless of the wishes of the artists!*<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So ultimately he\u2019s a hypocritical disgusting prick.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google Executive: \u201cYou Cannot Devalue Music.
